June 12 update on my wife

Good News!!! Thank you so much for your prayers for my wife Denise. Her bone marrow has begun to produce blood cells again! (Red cells to carry oxygen, white cells to fight infections and platelets for normal blood coagulation) All three are improving! Her doctors at NIH (National Institutes of Health) are thrilled calling Denise their star patient! They are even saying she may not need any more blood transfusions—her last was on Friday. Praise the Lord! Thank you for your prayers.

In case you didn’t know, Denise was diagnosed with bone marrow failure (severe aplastic anemia) in mid-March and is undergoing a clinical trial at NIH in Bethesda MD just outside Washington DC. She is staying with our friends Bob and Pat Hale. I returned home four weeks ago to be with my daughter Renee (who sadly had a miscarriage) and to teach a mission class at I.B.C.D. in OK (Institute of Biblical Community Development). Renee is now visiting with Denise in VA now while I’m here helping my son-in-law. We are working on home repairs so Denise can come back to a nicer and mold-free home.

Thanks also for your patience with me in replying to your emails and messages. I hope to spend some serious time catching up on my communications very soon.

Update on my wife and our family

Thank you all for your prayers for my wife Denise. She is still in Bethesda MD being treated at the N.I.H. (National Institutes of Health) as an outpatient. She is part of a clinical trial for bone marrow failure. The bone marrow is where our blood cells are constantly being made. The first of the three key treatment drugs (ATG) went very well with no serious side effects (like serum sickness). She is finally taking all three treatment drugs and doing well though she has had her ups and downs. It can take several months before her bone marrow produces blood cells again. In the meantime she needs regular blood transfusions.

We continue to be awed at God’s provision for her to be cared for by some of the best doctors in the world. And above all that man can do, we are putting our faith in God and His promises through Christ for healing. Many of you are trusting in God with us for her total healing.

I had to return to Texas for a couple of weeks to deal with finances and be with my oldest daughter Renee who also miscarried a few weeks ago at 2 months along. You can imagine her pain as she was so anticipating the birth of their third child. Your prayers for her and her husband Azarja would be so appreciated and also for my daughter Anna who recently delivered her baby prematurely (5-6 weeks early). Our little Jordan still needs oxygen due to the high elevation in CO. It has been especially difficult for us all to be separated from each other through these difficult times. I would appreciate your continued prayers for our whole family.

Thanks so much. I’ll keep you posted.

Important prayer request & health update on Denise

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This is to inform you of a serious medical condition that we are facing. On my return from my latest mission trip in March 2013, I found my wife Denise was extremely weak and fatigued. She was seeing a blurry patch in her vision that prompted a visit to the eye doctor. He ordered a blood lab which revealed critically low levels of platelets and red blood cells. Denise had to go immediately to the hospital. This resulted in two blood transfusions over the course a 9-day hospital stay. They ran a number of tests including two bone marrow biopsies.  At first they thought it was Leukemia but the bone marrow ruled it out. This seemed like good news until they found she has Aplastic Anemia or Myelodysplastic Syndrome, two other potentially fatal blood disorders.

I (Gerry) have been focused exclusively on caring for Denise since her hospitalization and researching the internet to find out all I can about these rare diseases and how to best treat them. In the course of that research we found a medical practice in NJ of physicians who use nutritional therapy in their practice and who accept patients for counseling by phone. This is in addition to (not instead of) our local doctor’s prescriptions. Denise has now radically changed her diet, eating mainly fresh vegetables (raw and cooked), fruits, berries, beans, mushrooms, legumes, seeds and nuts to enhance her healing.  This nutritional therapy may require several months to have a significant effect.

I had to take Denise back to the hospital again this past week for another blood transfusion. This is a very serious situation and we covet your prayers for healing and God’s direction in the decisions we are facing relative to her treatment and care.

Your prayers are very much needed and appreciated at this time.

Thanks so much for your support and prayers,

Gerry and Denise

PS: Thank you for your patience with my replies to emails and comments. I hope to reply to you as soon as I can. Thank you so much for your loving concern!

Please Pray for my Wife

Dear friends

Please excuse me for such a long absence in any news. I have been involved in a number of mission trips to various countries and travel in the US over the last 6 months and lots of study and writing in-between.   It is with a heavy heart I am asking you all to keep my wife Denise in your prayers.  She has been diagnosed with Leukemia a couple of days ago and we are awaiting the results regarding which type it is—hopefully by tomorrow afternoon.

The oncologist strongly suspects that it is “Hairy Cell” Leukemia (HCL), and if the biopsy confirms this, it offers strong promise (95% plus) for complete remission for up to 10 years (or more) with a treatment plan taking only 7 days (so we are told).  We greatly appreciate your prayers that God will give Denise and I wisdom in dealing with any treatment options we might face in the next few days.  Thanks so very much. I’ll keep you posted.  I would love to hear from you but only ask that you be patient for my replies as I do not know when I will have time to write back to each of you individually.

Denise in at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen Texas, South tower, Oncology room 405. Please do not send flowers as they are off limits to her room as she is in reverse quarantine due to very low immunity and cannot risk exposure to bacteria of any kind.

We are trusting in God as our rock through all of this praying for total healing and yet with an attitude of acceptance whatever He wills for us.

Thanks so much for your love and prayers at this time.

Love you all,

Gerry and Denise

Book Revision Update

Dear friends,

You haven’t heard from me in a while as I have been immersed in the book revision process. I’ve changed direction on the New Third Edition.

I came to realize, last week, that this revision project needs much more time than I had anticipated. The more I revised the more things I wanted to add. It just got overwhelming. I was getting quite stressed over it and finally found peace in a new idea.

I have decided instead, Lord willing of course, to publish an online “Appendage” of the current 2010 edition; and this, little by little. (See new tab above—Book Appendage) In this way I can post new material to this Appendage as it becomes available, including something new: “Section Notes” of the present 2010 edition. This also allows me to field test new material before publishing it in a new edition.

I am so sorry to disappoint anyone who has been looking forward to a new edition. A new edition will not be coming anytime soon. There is no urgency as I can post new things in this Appendage.

Please pray for me as I redirect my focus from book revision, to the online Appendage and more FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions). Would you please help me by sending me any answers to difficult questions that have blessed you (from whatever sources you found them) so that I can benefit from your discoveries and pass them down to our readers too?

Thank you to each one who has sent in to me some new Scriptures they would like to see added to my list of 186 in Appendix one. They are a great blessing. These will be added to the Appendage as time and our Lord allows. Please keep them coming!

Also, I have stepped back (for now) from writing weekly email newsletters to focus instead on my own personal time in Bible study, reading, writing and prayer. Newsletters are still forthcoming, but not on any weekly basis, but as I feel inspired to share something fresh and new with you.

Thank you to each of you who are praying for us, my family, and our ministries. It is so appreciated!

Love to all!

The Evangelical Universalist (Author Interview Video)

ROBIN PARRY INTERVIEW 36 Min VIDEO

I appreciate Robin’s humble and graceful attitude that comes through in this interview. The video may be an effective way to quickly introduce the Blessed Hope to a friend or especially a pastor, or church / mission leader. It’s a little long, but worthwhile.

I urge you to pray for Robin that he will have a growing impact in the promotion of this message in the Church in general and in academic / theological institutions in both England and America. May God use Robin and His writings powerfully in the world for His glory! See my review of his book below.

Exciting Times

I am very encouraged by the number of books and websites and discussions on the internet that are emerging that relate directly or indirectly to God’s eternal judgment.  It is becoming harder and harder to keep up with it all. I am convinced we are living in a transitional era in Church history—a time that will take the Protestant reformation to the next level. The whole Christian world is being impacted including the Catholic tradition. This is not merely a reformation in theology, but more of a revolution of love–a revolution in our idea of God’s love and power. It affects how we feel about God. It is a revolution in the sense of the peace and joy it brings to our hearts and the love it fosters in our hearts for God and man. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard something like this:

“The message of God’s unending love for everyone has changed everything for me. I now love God like I never did before, and people too. I no longer judge people anymore thinking they are one of God’s rejects, but I accept them with a love I never had before, because I know God will never stop loving them.”

You just don’t know how often I hear this same theme. If you have such a story, please leave a comment below.

The Evangelical Universalist

I want to bring your attention to a book I see is having a powerful impact in theological circles. The title is: ‘The Evangelical Universalist” by Gregory MacDonald (Pseudonym ) This same author (Robin Parry) co-edited with Christopher Partridge,  “Universal Salvation? The Current Debate” and is the speaker in the above video.

The Evangelical Universlalist Amazon

The Evangelical Universalist presents a different approach to the same theme presented in Hope Beyond Hell. It is particularly appropriate, in my view, for pastors and theologians – academic types. It is not as easy to read as Hope Beyond Hell or quite as bold or sure about its conclusion of hope.

“Gregory MacDonald’s defense of universalism is well argued logically, theologically, and especially biblically . . . Evangelicals, among whom Macdonald would count himself, will find him a civil and insightfully critical dialogue partner.” —Thomas F. Johnson (Professor of Biblical Theology, George Fox University)

“. . . [T]his passionate and lucid advocacy of an evangelical universalism…not only engages with key passages in the context of the overall biblical narrative but also treats clearly the profound theological and philosophical issues to which that narrative gives rise…readers…will find this book an excellent, accessible and indispensable aid in their own attempts to grapple with what its author describes as ‘a hell of a problem’. . .” —Andrew T. Lincoln (Portland Chair in New Testament Studies, University of Gloucestershire)

“. . . I was struck by the persuasiveness of many of Gregory MacDonald’s arguments, not least since they rest in an unusually adept interweaving of biblical exegesis with relevant philosophical and theological considerations  . . .” —Joel B. Green (Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Asbury Theological Seminary)

“With this wonderful book, Gregory MacDonald joins the growing body of Evangelical Christians who now accept a doctrine of universal reconciliation. But I know of no one who has set forth an equally clear, thorough and compelling case for a universalist reading of the Bible as a whole . . .” —Thomas Talbott (Professor of Philosophy, Willamette University)

NOTE:

I am fully aware that a passage which might support the Blessed Hope in my view may not at all support it in your view and vice versa. It all depends on our underlying paradigms. The views we have inherited about ultimate reality, in particular, how God deals in judgment with human beings in the life to come, will undoubtedly affect how we interpret the entirety of the Scriptures, and needless to say, especially those relative to God’s judgment.

The above list is far from exhaustive. In fact, if you consider those which include additional references which are noted only in parentheses, you can imagine how long this list could be. I am presenting these numerous passages to show that my hope is solidly anchored in the Scriptures. Lord willing, and as time allows, I hope to add additional passages in the future on our website.

Along with the Scriptures, there other factors that have convinced me of the truth these texts allude to. Those factors consist of reason, conscience, and experience which are elaborated on elsewhere. These are all valid reasons when combined with the Biblical evidence.

May God guide you into all His truth as you seek Him with your whole heart.

Is there “Hope Beyond Hell”? (47 SECOND video)

This video makes a powerful statement about God’s character in judgment—His love, mercy and goodness. It implies, by its reference to hell fire (as being a spiritual and not literal fire), that God’s Gehenna (hell fire) judgment is something good and positive. This truth is critical to know because it directly affects our view of God.

A video doesn’t have to be long to make a point. Mini clips (under a minute) are very popular. Who doesn’t have a few seconds to view a clip on a topic that grips them? What is more vital than God and our eternal destiny?

Everyone on the planet, in their heart of hearts, wishes that God were truly a loving and merciful being. This dramatic clip directs us to a source that offers a convincing Biblical testimony of our heavenly Father’s character: one that proclaims the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for all people—the Lord of Lord, and King of Kings; the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. (John 1:29)

With so much news and media bombarding all of us, we must earn our right to be heard. Short, concise videos cry out a simple message: “View Me! You won’t be disappointed!” They are powerful and effective—they work!

I pray you will post this clip to Facebook, Twitter, etc.  Some of your friends will be moved by it and will visit our website or share it with their friends too. Who knows how many thousands this short clip may reach in God’s time? Please pray He uses it mightily.  Thanks so much.

Translations I Especially Appreciate

Translations I Especially Appreciate

The key to understanding the Scriptures, in my view, does not reside in trusting any particular translation. Neither is it our academic knowledge of the ancient languages. Nor is it the theological expositions or systematic theologies we have studied. The answer is found hearing the Holy Spirit speak to our hearts confirming God’s truth. Jesus, in a prayer to His father said:

“I thank you Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them to babes.” Matthew 11:25

Note that he is relating to God’s judgment in this context. The religious leaders and experts in the Scriptures (the wise and prudent) of Christ’s day were blinded to the true nature and purposes of God. They “crucified the Lord of glory!”

To really understand the Scriptures, we must first know the character of God. That is our key. If our concept of God is one of a harsh and cruel being who torments most of His creatures forever in hell, we will interpret all of Scripture from that frame of reference. It will be the same if we believe in a God of limitless love and mercy.

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness…” Matthew 6:22-23

If our view (eye) about God’s character and nature are correct, then our whole being will be full of light as we read the Scriptures, for we will interpret them through the correct lens. We will have the key that unlocks the meaning of the Scriptures to our hearts and minds. I can say one thing with certainty: never in my entire Christian life have I experienced such a depth and consistency of peace and joy as I have in my present understanding of God.

So, having established that the key interpretive factor is the knowledge of God’s true character, it is also essential that we compare many translations to get a clearer view of what the Biblical writers actually said. This is especially critical since most popular translations were created by scholars holding an extremely negative and horrific concept of God – a God who tortures His creatures forever in hell. Believing in a false concept of God naturally results in gross interpretative errors. In light of this, here are a few translations that I especially appreciate and which I compare with many others I use. Remember, no translation is perfect!

“New King James Version”

This is my main translation which I read and memorize. I do so because it is a popular and well respected translation, and because of the KJV fame. But even more important, because of the references to the footnotes which discloses the variants in the original ancient manuscripts, which for me is very important to know. I find those Greek textual variants very significant at times. For example, there I discovered that 1 Corinthians 15:55 is very different from the NIV which is in line with the NU-Greek Text (Nestle – Aland Greek N.T. (N) and United Bible Societies (U), hence acronym “NU-text.”) Paul says, “O Hades (same word used in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus – Luke 16:23), where is your victory?” So then, if the Textus Receptus (Received Text) which the KJV and the NKJV is based on is the more reliable Greek text (as some believe), then the one time Paul used the word Hades (Hell?), He used it to proclaim God’s victory over it!  And regardless, Jesus exhorts us saying, “Do not be afraid, I… have the keys of Hades and of death. (Rev 1:17-18).”  So the parable of Luke 16: 19-31,so often quoted in defense of a “hopeless” hell,  is not hopeless at all!

“Young’s Literal Translation” by Robert Young, author of the popular concordance named after him.

This is a good literal (word for word) translation. I refer to it frequently. A word for word translation has a positive side and a negative side. It will also leave out the richer meaning of the original words that a word for word rendition cannot provide.  This is why I compare at least 20 translations whenever a particular passage prompts a closer look. You can access it at BibleGateway.com or Amazon

“Concordant Literal New Testament”

This is a unique translation in that each Greek word is matched to one specific English word with a few exceptions. This can help us more easily discern for ourselves, through usage, what the Biblical writers meant. Some people have criticized this approach because they do not understand it. When you get it, I recommend you learn the abbreviations and symbols explained in the front.  Like I said above concerning YLT, a literal word for word translation has limitations. I refer you to the comment below by Rev. Nathaniel J. Merritt Met.D. Available on Amazon and at this site:The Concordant Literal New Testament

Rotherham Emphasized Bible (1902)

This is an older translation and not as easy to read as most more modern versions. But the value of a Bible translation, to me,  should be measured by its faithfulness to the original texts and not to the interpretation of its meaning. You can find it on Amazon where I see it has very good reviews. I only recently have started using it. I will use it as a reference.

Of this translation, John R. Kohlenberger III writes, “The Emphasized Bible is one of the most innovative and thoroughly researched translations ever done by a single individual. Its presentation of emphases and grammatical features of the original language still reward careful study.” Kohlenberger is the author or co-editor of more than three dozen biblical reference books and study Bibles. He has taught at Multnomah Bible College and Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon.

One website I found explains in detail why they feel this is the best translation for accuracy. Please judge the value of these comments for yourself. I did find them interesting though, and so I share them here. For more information, read the Amazon reviews and see this site (which offers a free download): www.teleiosministries.com

“A strictly literal rendering may not be so pleasant to the ear as one where the apparent sense is chiefly aimed at, yet it is not euphony but truth that ought to be sought. There are tens of thousands departures from the original text in the current versions. There are about two thousand instances in the New Testament where the definite article (the) is omitted. Verbal inspiration can be the least practical use to those who depend upon those versions” (Young’s preface). The Rotherham Emphasized Bible is the World’s best English translation of the Hebrew and Greek text that we have seen to date. This translation’s shortcoming is in capitalizing the word spirit [ruah (pneuma)].–Teleo Ministries

An Amazon review I appreciated was from Brian Albert. He writes, “This is really a fabulous work. Reading Rotherham’s Bible translation is about as close as you can get to reading the scriptures in the original Hebrew and Greek, without having to actually learn those languages. For one thing, those languages have devices built into the grammar that place degress of emphasis on certain words and phrases. This gets lost in an English translation. Rotherham uses accent marks, brackets, double brackets, etc. to restore the emphasis. Now you can read in English and see what words and phrases were emphasized by the inspired writers. Rotherham also preserves the sentence structure of the original Hebrew and Greek. This makes the English sentences a little awkward, but I would say that it is still highly readable. Most importantly, Rotherham translates words consistently throughout. Most Bibles often translate the same Greek word into several different English words. Often this is done to preserve a certain doctrine. For instance, it can easily be shown that the Greek word “aion” means an age, a long but limited amount of time. Most Bibles render this word as eternity, but in places where the context doesn’t support such a rendering, a different English word is used, such as world, age, or course. Rotherham consistently renders aion as age and its adjective form aionios as age-abiding, not eternal. In Matt 25:46 Rotherham’s version says the unrighteous go off to “age-abiding correction” and not to “eternal punishment” as other Bibles say.”

Again, as I said above regarding YLT comment, a word for word translation has its imitations. If you are experienced with this translation, please email me to share your comments about it.

“Weymouth Translation” New Testament

The Weymouth New Testament (“WNT”), also known as The New Testament in Modern Speech or The Modern Speech New Testament, is a translation into “modern” English as used in the nineteenth century from the text of The Resultant Greek Testament by Richard Francis Weymouth. Weymouth’s popular translation of the New Testament into English was first published in 1903 and has been in print through numerous editions ever since with millions of copies sold. Weyland’s aim was to discover how the inspired writers of the New Testament would have expressed and described the events of the New Testament and Gospels had they been actually writing in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Weymouth succeeded in rendering it into a dignified modern English edition; the absence of ecclesiastical and doctrinal bias make it accessible to Christian readers of all denominations.

The Weymouth New Testament is in the public domain

You can read it free online at Bible Study Tools dot com. However, be aware that the intro material is from the NIV Study Bible and not part of this translation. Note also, this is not a literal translation. But that is not a bad thing, because we need to compare both approaches to translation. The Introductory Explanation in this Translation explains clearly why this is so. You can access that on Amazon if you click the “LOOK INSIDE” feature. Here’s the link:  LOOK INSIDE

“The Apostolic Bible Polyglot” by Charles Van der Pool

The Greek Old Testament, commonly referred to as the Septuagint was translated from the Hebrew Scriptures approximately 250 years before Christ. For hundreds of years after Christ, during the formation of the apostolic age, the Greek Scriptures were consistently read and quoted by the Church Fathers.

When the apostles wrote the Scriptures to various churches and people, the common written form was Greek, and most of the Jews of the Diaspora understood Greek, and lived in areas where Greek was spoken. It was common for the writers of the New Testament when need arose to quote the Old Testament, to quote the Greek Scriptures rather than the Hebrew Scriptures. See this link for another interesting report about the Septuagint:
http://www.scrollpublishing.com/store/Septuagint.html

This wonderful resource is the first numerically coded Greek Old Testament. It allows the student of the Word to study both Testaments in the same language, and to follow the association of a word from either the New Testament or the Old Testament or vice versa. For example, if you want to better understand the meaning of a New Testament Greek word, you can now reference the Old Testament as well. This provides you additional passages to help you assess its meaning.

This reference includes a 13 page Introduction, a 1232 page numerically coded interlinear Greek-English Old Testament (LXX), a numerically coded 372 page interlinear Greek-English New Testament, an 88 page numerically coded English-Greek Index, and a 366 page numerically coded Lexical Concordance…totaling 2112 pages. It uses a numerical coding system called the “AB-Strong Numbering System.”

I was privileged to speak with the editor of this awesome reference (Charles Van der Pool) and discovered that he devoted 25 years of His life on it. I asked about the Greek words “aion” and “aionios.” And though he holds the traditional view, He did say that in a future edition he may transliterate these words as “aion” and “aionios” due to the controversy surrounding them.

It may be purchased in hard copy from Amazon or downloaded free from the publishers at:  http://septuagint-interlinear-greek-bible.com/

“Jonathan Mitchell New Testament” by Jonathan Mitchell

What I like about this reference is that Jonathan Mitchell believes in a God of limitless love and mercy, unlike most popular translations. Another wonderful feature is that this translator presents to us the various interpretive options he encountered in the text. The principle that governed him was trust in the Holy Spirit to guide his readers to discover what interpretation was best in each case. That is awesome! Thank you, Jonathan Mitchell, for not trying to be the Holy Spirit for us. Available on Amazon or at: http://jonathanmitchellnewtestament.com/

Finally…I pray you will find some of these translations helpful as you seek to understand the Scriptures more accurately. But remember…

In Luke 24, after Jesus rose from the grave, He expounded the Scriptures to two of His disciples and vanished. Then they said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us?” (verse 32).  Luke says again in verse 45, “He opened their understanding that they might comprehend the Scriptures.” We cannot understand the Scriptures unless Christ opens our hearts to them. And when He does, something burns within us! That’s because God’s message is the GOOD NEWS of PEACE (Acts 10:36 NIV).

Please get this:

When Christ opens our minds to the Scriptures, especially God’s precious promises, our hearts should burn within us (v 32). His gracious words fill our hearts with peace, even “joy inexpressible and full of glory” as Peter says (1Peter 1:8). If the message we are hearing from the Scriptures is not producing joy with a burning effect in us, filling our hearts with peace, I do not believe we are hearing from God. Even in His warnings, peace remains, because we know His unfailing and enduring Father heart for each one of us.

Bible reading without hearing from Christ is lifeless. It is about communion with Him, not of duty, but desire. It is our desire for Him that causes our hearts to burn when we hear His gracious words. They “marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth” (Lu 4:22). When is the last time you “marveled” at His wonderful words and your heart burned within you?

When our hearts burn within us we know that God has talked with us.

How to Nurture Peace and Joy in Your Christian Life

How to Nurture Peace and Joy in Your Christian Life

I believe the peace I have come to know in Christ is the result of having applied (even without realizing it) certain critical anchor points in Biblical interpretation that I would like to share with you. Each of them has solid Biblical support. These points need to be read over and over again (even studied and memorized) if they are to have a lasting and transforming impact on your life. Simply reading them once will accomplish little.

Our natural human tendency regarding death and judgment always tends toward fear and anxiety. In order to protect our peace, we must make a determined effort to guard our peace. I was blessed by what Terry Schwartz wrote to me in an email a few weeks ago:

“Anchor Points” is in some ways a condensation of “Hope Beyond Hell.” It is great to have these thoughts and these powerful scriptures at hand. Sometimes in music analysis we do a kind of condensation, a stripping off of all non-essentials in several layers until we are left with the harmonic or melodic core. Although every note is important, it is helpful to know what functions as the foundation of the composition. In a similar way, your “points” are a marvelous condensation and summary of the biblical core from which the entire scriptural narrative flows. I loved it and plan to use it often to further establish my faith and grasp of the truth. This is important because I grew up, like most evangelicals believing a huge lie; one that sometimes returns to incite fear. But those days are now few and far between. Hearing the truth does cause my heart to warm to the Lord. I lead a Bible study, home church. I’d like to copy your essay for them to read if you don’t mind….” Dr. Terry Schwartz, Professor at Wheaton College.
