Church History Supports “Hope Beyond Hell”

“History of Opinions on the Scriptural Doctrine of Retribution” by Edward Beecher, D.D presents a powerful case for “Hope Beyond Hell.”

Of all I have read on the subject of Church History, the “History of Opinions on the Scriptural Doctrine of Retribution” by Edward Beecher has helped me the most.  He closely examines what the church Fathers wrote and taught on the subject of ultimate human destiny, particularly the doctrine of “eternal” or “everlasting” punishment.

As I read his work, I got the sense that he was genuine, a sincere seeker after the truth. He does not appear to have any denomination to defend.  As well, for an older work, his writing style is not too difficult to follow. But, if you are not accustomed to reading older works, it may be a bit challenging at times. I hope you will be patient with yourself and persevere. You will be well rewarded for you efforts. It would be wonderful if an English major could tackle this project and convert it into modern English style.

I recommend that you start with chapter fourteen where Jesus enters into view. This is what has helped me most.

May God lead you into all His truth.
